Synopsis At the end of the Wild West era, cowboys Monte Walsh and Chet Rollins arrive in the town of Harmony, where they reconnect with their old friend Shorty Austin. The former wanderers do their best to settle down: Chet gets married and finds work, while Monte pursues saloon girl Martine to a Jack Schaefer was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was the son of a German American attorney.

In 1929 he graduated from Oberlin College with a major in English. From he attended graduate school at Columbia University, but left without completing his Master of Arts degree. Shane is an excellent book but Monte Walsh surpasses the classic. Jack Schaefer truly captured the cowboy life and culture. If you don't like this book you don't like westerns.
